In 2022, with a moderate increase of +2.2%, executive salaries will start to rise again in a job market that remains tight and an uncertain economic environment.
Executive salaries increase by +2.2% in 2022 supported by the economic recovery
The transport and logistics sector benefits from the highest wage increase: + 3.8% on average nationally
Among all the remunerations analyzed, that of the planning technician recorded the highest increase at the national level: + 6.8%
In the regions, it is in Rhône-Alpes that the evolution of executive salaries is the most dynamic with an average increase of + 3.8% The results of the 20th edition of the Expectra executive salary barometer are published in a specific context . Although the job market remains very dynamic, the record level of inflation, the uncertain geopolitical context and the tensions over raw materials are all clouds likely to weigh on business activity. Nevertheless, after two years of health crisis – which have slowed down the mobility and development of executives -, wages are returning to a more sustained rate of growth, with an overall average increase of + 2.2% against + 2% in 2021 and +2.3% in 2020. Among the sectors that benefited the most from the recovery, transport and logistics, still driven by e-commerce, posted the strongest wage growth (+3.8%) , followed by the construction sector (+ 2.7%).
An average wage increase that hides strong disparitiesThe average increase of +2.2% in the salaries of executives observed over the past year may seem timid in view of the inflationary context of recent months. But companies, faced with the double difficulty of recruiting new talent in a tight market and retaining their existing workforce, are showing caution and are very attentive to a possible downturn in the economic situation. However, with a balance of power that has clearly reversed over the past two years in favor of employees, the average rebound in executive compensation observed in 2022 hides strong disparities. In the regions, the most sought-after functions thus see their level of remuneration approaching + 10%. This is the case for the salary of human resources manager in Rhône-Alpes, which soared by + 9.4%.
The median salary of executives stands at 48,930 euros in 2022. Over the past 5 years, executive salaries have increased overall by +12.1%. At the start of the new school year in September, despite an uncertain environment, recruitment remains extremely strong and some sectors are posting salary increases well above the national average.
Transport and logistics: the supply chain benefits from the highest wage increases
With French industry boosted by the economic recovery plan, the trend is towards the rise of the supply chain, which is positioned as a strategic link in the company. Posting strong growth driven by e-commerce, the branch is experiencing a very significant increase in its activity and is facing a structural shortage of staff, coupled with recruitment difficulties. A situation that contributes to the increase in wages. Remuneration in the transport and logistics sector thus benefited from a significant increase of +3.8% and logistics functions monopolize the top 10 of the highest salary increases. The record this year, at the national level, is held by the planning technician (+ 6.8%), followed closely by the logistics manager (+ 5.9%) and the supplier (+ 5.7%). ).
Despite the economic situation, the construction sector posted the second strongest growth
The construction sector posted the second strongest increase in this barometer, with an average increase in remuneration of +2.7%. Over 5 years, wages within the sector have increased by +15.4%, a development that is clearly higher than the general trend (+12.1%). However, in construction, business prospects are settling, in both new and renovation, despite well-filled order books. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, supply problems have become more pronounced and the prices of materials have soared again. Despite everything, in 2022, the construction sector continues to create jobs and the significant recruitment difficulties are putting strong pressure on wages. The site manager, essential to the smooth running of projects, benefits from a strong salary increase of +4.5%. Also proof that many achievements are under consideration, the salaries of the construction designer (+ 3.5%) and the building studies technician (+ 3%) also recorded good performances.
Banking and insurance: a sector that remains dynamic
The banking and insurance sector has continued to perform since the health crisis, driven in particular by demand for mortgages and the savings capacity of the French. Wages in the sector are experiencing an average increase of +2.6%. The insurance accountant sees his remuneration increase by + 5.8%, which raises him to 4th place in the national Top 10, and he signs in passing the record for salary increase in PACA: + 7.9%.
NB – The median salary divides the population into two equal parts: one half earns more, the other half earns less With four functions represented in the top 10 of the highest salary increases, IT professions are seeing their remuneration boosted by a shortage unprecedented talent. The resurgence of cyberattacks makes the security engineer a skill as rare as it is sought after, which leads to an increase in his emoluments of + 5.3%. The salary of the IT manager, a cog in the digitalization of companies, continues to grow by +4.9%. Finally, the infrastructure project manager, a historical IT profession, recorded the best development in the sector (+ 6.3%) ahead of the telecom study technician (+ 5.8%).
In the regions, two major employment pools stand out: Rhône-Alpes and Nord
Analysis of the evolution of wages by region shows a clear catch-up effect: the Rhône-Alpes region, in last place in the ranking last year, regains the lead with an average increase in wages of + 3.8% . As for the North region, it moved from second to last to second place, with an average increase in remuneration of +2.9%. The other regions follow the general trend more timidly, with wage increases ranging between + 1.7% in the South West and + 2% in the PACA region. The Northeast brings up the rear with an average wage increase of +1.2%. If the national ranking marks the culmination of technical skills, in the regions it does more honor to support functions. The most beautiful evolution goes to the human resources manager in Rhône-Alpes, with a revaluation of + 9.4% of his salary. The figures professions are not to be outdone: the remuneration of the insurance accountant recorded the strongest increase in the PACA region at + 7.9% and the collection technician working in Île-de-France saw his salary increase by + 6.9 %. Digital functions are also making a notable breakthrough in the regions: the digital project manager’s salary increases by +8.5% in the South-West and that of the data analyst increases by +8.2% in the North-East. . For Khaled Aboulaich, CEO of Expectra: “In 2022, the evolution of executive salaries will start to rise again. Although the observed increase of +2.2% over one year does not yet reflect the magnitude of the situation we are experiencing, it does set the tone. In all sectors, the gap between supply and demand for skills is widening. In the current situation of near full employment, and in an inflationary environment, the next NAO[1][1] should continue to drive up executive salaries. Nevertheless, in a context of protean uncertainties, companies must show agility as well as prudence in the management of their workforce. Thus, if remuneration remains the main component in the choice of a company by an employee, the balance between personal and professional life, autonomy in the management of working time, training, mobility, sense of missions offered, are all levers on which companies can rely to retain their employees and attract new talent. »
Methodology :
The Expectra salary barometer is constructed from all of the positions filled by Expectra (Interim, CDD and CDI) from bac + 2 to bac + 5 profiles. The rule imposing that a temporary employee be paid at the same level as a tenured employee guarantees good representation of salaries. In total, no less than 35,607 payslips were analyzed and enriched with SmartData data representing 136 qualifications, including 74 executive functions and 62 ETAM functions (employees, technicians and supervisors), in the IT professions, engineering, accounting, finance, HR, legal, sales and marketing.
Overall, more than 7,120 companies are represented (68% in the provinces and 32% in Île-de-France). The barometer presents the salaries (minimum, median and maximum) and the salary changes recorded in 2022 vs 2021. The salary amounts are indicated in gross euros.
